How it works

Stride ≈ height × 0.414 · Distance = steps × stride · Calories ≈ distance(km) × weight(kg) × 0.5

Calories from walking depend mainly on how far you go and how much you weigh, since moving a heavier body over the same distance costs more energy. This tool estimates stride length as about 41% of your height, multiplies by step count for distance, then applies roughly 0.5 kcal per kilogram per kilometre — a mid-range figure for ordinary walking. Speed, terrain, incline and fitness all shift the real number, so treat it as a ballpark rather than a precise measurement.

Worked example

For someone 170 cm tall: stride ≈ 1.70 × 0.414 = 0.70 m. 8,000 steps cover 8,000 × 0.70 = 5,600 m ≈ 5.6 km. At 70 kg, calories ≈ 5.6 × 70 × 0.5 ≈ 196 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

For an average adult it is very roughly 300–500 kcal, but it depends heavily on body weight, stride and pace. A heavier or taller person covering more ground per step burns more.

Why does weight change the result so much?

The energy to move is proportional to the mass you carry over a distance, so a heavier body burns more calories for the same walk. That is why the formula scales directly with weight.

Is this the same as calories from an activity tracker?

It is a similar estimate but trackers may add resting metabolism, heart rate and incline data. Expect differences of 10–20% between methods — none is exact.
