How it works

calories ≈ 0.57 × weight(lb) × miles, at ~2,000 steps per mile

Walking burns roughly 0.57 kcal per pound of body weight per mile at ordinary pace, and an average stride covers a mile in about 2,000 steps. Heavier bodies and faster or uphill walking burn more.

Worked example

10,000 steps at 170 lb: 5 miles × 0.57 × 170 ≈ 485 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10,000 steps a magic number?

No — it began as a pedometer marketing slogan. Research shows health benefits climbing steeply up to ~7,500–8,500 steps and continuing more gently beyond.

Why does my watch disagree?

Devices estimate stride, pace and heart-rate effects differently. Any single number is ±15% — the trend over weeks is what to watch.

Do steps count toward my TDEE?

Yes — everyday walking is a big part of the activity multiplier. Avoid counting the same steps twice by picking the activity level that already reflects them.
