How it works

flat area = length × height − openings − (corner length × 0.5) · add 10% waste · corner stone = corner length × 1.10

Manufactured stone veneer is bought two ways: flat panels sold by the square foot and L-shaped corner pieces sold by the linear foot. Because each linear foot of corner wraps around and covers roughly half a square foot of the flat field, that area is subtracted from the flats so you do not buy it twice. Openings for windows and doors come off as well. Add about 10% for cuts, breakage and fitting stones together.

Worked example

A 20 × 8 ft wall with 8 linear feet of outside corner and no openings: gross 160 sq ft, minus 8 × 0.5 = 4 sq ft covered by corners, leaves 156 sq ft of flats. With 10% waste that is about 172 sq ft of flat plus 8.8 linear feet of corner stone.

Frequently asked questions

Why are corners priced separately?

Corner pieces are pre-formed into an L so the stone appears to have real thickness at outside edges. They cost more and are sold by the linear foot; every linear foot of corner also replaces about half a square foot of flat stone.

How much veneer waste should I plan for?

About 10% is normal for cutting stones to fit, breakage and blending pieces from different boxes. Intricate layouts or lots of openings can push it toward 15%.

Do I subtract windows and doors?

Yes — subtract each opening’s square footage from the flat area. Keep a little of that saved stone in reserve, though, since edges around openings often need extra cut pieces.
