Study Abroad Budget Calculator
Build a realistic study-abroad budget — program fee, flights, monthly living costs and extras — into one total and an average monthly spend.
How it works
Living total = monthly living × months · One-time = program fee + flights + other · Total budget = one-time + living total · Average per month = total ÷ months
A study-abroad budget mixes one-time costs — the program fee, round-trip flights, visa and insurance — with recurring monthly living expenses that scale with how long you stay. Splitting the two makes the trip easier to plan: the one-time block is fixed, while the living block grows with each extra month abroad. The average-per-month figure helps you compare destinations and spot when a longer stay in a cheaper city beats a short one in an expensive one.
Worked example
A four-month program with an $8,000 fee, $1,200 flights and $500 of visa and insurance is $9,700 of one-time cost. Add $900 a month in living costs (4 × $900 = $3,600) for a $13,300 total, or about $3,325 a month.
Frequently asked questions
Does financial aid cover study abroad?
Often yes — federal aid and many scholarships can apply to approved programs, and some study-abroad-specific scholarships exist. Check with your aid office about which costs are covered and how disbursement works overseas.
What costs do students forget?
Common surprises are visas, health insurance, a passport, local transport, phone plans, and weekend travel. Building an "other one-time" and a realistic monthly living figure into the budget avoids the shortfall.
Should I budget for currency swings?
Yes. Living costs are paid in local currency, so exchange-rate moves change your dollar cost during the trip. Padding the monthly living figure gives a cushion against a weaker home currency.
