Sublimation Mug & Tumbler Wrap Template Calculator

Get the exact print template size for a sublimation wrap — straight mugs and tumblers as a rectangle, tapered tumblers as an unrolled cone arc with inner/outer radii and sweep angle — from the top and bottom diameters and height, with bleed, handle gap and the paper size needed.

How it works

straight: width = π D − gap + bleed · tapered: slant s = √(h² + ((D − d) ÷ 2)²), R_outer = s × D ÷ (D − d), R_inner = R_outer − s, sweep θ = 180° × D ÷ R_outer

A straight-sided mug is a cylinder, so its label is a rectangle as long as the circumference; a tapered tumbler is a cone frustum, and a cone unrolls into a ring segment, not a rectangle — wrapping a rectangle round it either bunches at the base or gaps at the rim. The geometry follows from extending the taper to its apex: the distance from the apex to the rim along the wall becomes the outer radius of the arc, the slant height of the printable band its width, and the angle of the slice is set by the rim circumference. Adding a small overlap hides the seam, and a handle gap on mugs keeps the paper from bridging the handle.

Worked example

A 30 oz tapered tumbler 88 mm at the rim, 70 mm at the base and 200 mm tall has a slant height of 200.2 mm, an outer radius of 978.8 mm and an inner radius of 778.6 mm; the wrap is a 16.18° arc (16.47° with a 5 mm overlap), about 281 mm along the rim and 225 mm along the base, just fitting on A4 (comfortably on A3). A straight 20 oz skinny (72 mm) would simply need a 231 × 205 mm rectangle.

Frequently asked questions

My template is bigger than my printer.

Print it in two halves (split the arc at the middle and add a 5 mm overlap to each), or order tapered wraps on roll paper. Many 30 oz tumbler wraps are 11 × 17 in for this reason.

Why leave the top and bottom uncoated?

Most blanks are only sublimation-coated between the rim and the base; ink outside that area will not bond. Measure the coated band, not the whole height.
