Suit Size Calculator
Turn your chest, waist and height into a jacket size and length (Short, Regular or Long), the matching trouser waist and the European equivalent.
How it works
Jacket size = chest rounded to nearest even inch · Length = Short (<68 in) / Regular (68–73 in) / Long (>73 in) · Trouser waist = jacket − drop · EU size = jacket + 10
A US off-the-rack jacket size is simply your chest measurement in inches, rounded to the nearest even number, followed by a length letter set by your height. Suits are cut to a fixed "drop" — the difference between jacket and trouser waist — which is 6 inches for a regular fit and about 7 for a slimmer, more athletic cut. The European number is just the US size plus 10.
Worked example
With a 40 in chest you take a size 40 jacket. At 70 in tall you fall in the Regular range, so the size is 40R (EU 50). At a regular 6 in drop the paired trousers run about a 34 in waist.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the jacket number the same as my chest?
US suit sizing is defined that way: a "40" jacket is built for a 40-inch chest. The number is the body measurement, not a finished garment measurement, so a tailor still adds ease on top.
What does the letter after the number mean?
It sets the jacket length and sleeve/rise proportions: S (Short) for roughly under 5'8", R (Regular) for 5'8"–6'1", and L (Long) for taller. It matters as much as the number for how a jacket hangs.
Should I still get it tailored?
Yes. Off-the-rack sizing gets you the right base jacket, but sleeve length, trouser hem and waist suppression almost always need a tailor to look sharp.
