How it works

Clothing sizes are inherently table-based — there is no clean formula, because each region and brand cuts differently. This converter maps your size to the nearest row of a standard cross-reference chart and reads off the equivalents. For women, US, UK and EU numbers move in step (UK runs four numbers above US, EU is US plus 32); for men, dress sizing is built around the chest measurement in inches, with EU adding roughly 10. The S/M/L letters are broad bands that group several numeric sizes, which is why they are only a rough guide. Always compare the actual garment measurements when fit matters.
Worked example
A women's US 8 lines up with UK 12, EU 40 and a Medium. A men's 40-inch chest is a US/UK 40, EU 50 and also a Medium — though a slim-fit shirt in the same nominal size will feel a size smaller than a relaxed cut.
Frequently asked questions
Why do sizes vary so much between brands?
There is no enforced standard, and brands use "vanity sizing" and different fit models, so a Medium in one label is a Large in another. Treat any conversion as a starting point and check the brand’s size chart — ideally the garment’s chest, waist and length in centimetres — before buying.
How do I convert if I only know my measurements?
Measure your chest or bust, waist and hips with a soft tape, then match those to the brand’s size chart rather than relying on a size label. Body measurements are the one thing that stays constant while size numbers drift between makers and countries.
Are men’s sizes really based on the chest?
For shirts, jackets and suits, yes — the number is the chest measurement in inches, so a "40" fits a 40-inch chest. Trousers use waist and inseam in inches instead. EU sizes add about 10 to the chest number, which is why a 40-inch chest reads as a EU 50.
