How it works

NPS = % promoters − % detractors · scale −100 to +100 · passives excluded

Net Promoter Score comes from a single question — how likely are you to recommend us, from 0 to 10 — grouped into promoters (9–10), passives (7–8) and detractors (0–6). The score is simply the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors, so passives count toward the base but not the score. It ranges from −100 (everyone a detractor) to +100 (everyone a promoter).

Worked example

From 1,000 responses — 400 promoters, 350 passives, 250 detractors: promoters are 40%, detractors 25%, so NPS = 40 − 25 = +15.

Frequently asked questions

Why are passives ignored in the score?

Passives are treated as neutral — satisfied but unenthusiastic — so they neither add to nor subtract from the score. They still count in the denominator, which is why moving passives to promoters raises NPS.

What is a good NPS?

It is heavily industry-dependent, but broadly any positive score means you have more promoters than detractors. Above 30 is generally considered great and above 70 world-class, though you should benchmark against competitors in your sector.

Does NPS have a margin of error?

Yes. Because it is built from proportions, a small sample gives a noisy score. Use a proportion-based margin of error on the promoter and detractor shares to gauge how much the number could move.
