Swimming Pace Calculator (per 100m)
Find your swimming pace per 100 metres and per 100 yards from any distance and time, with speed and split times for common pool distances.
How it works
Pace per 100 m = time ÷ (distance ÷ 100) · Speed = distance ÷ time · 100 yd = 100 m × 0.9144
Swimmers compare efforts in time per 100, the way runners use pace per kilometre, because it is independent of how far you swam. A 25 m or 25 yd pool changes your raw time through the number of push-offs, so pace normalises that out for training logs. The distance-time figures assume you hold the same pace throughout — real races fade, so treat longer swims as an even-pace target rather than a prediction.
Worked example
400 m in 6:40 is 400 seconds over four 100s: 400 ÷ 4 = 100 s, a pace of 1:40 per 100 m, which is about 1:31 per 100 yd.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good 100 m swim pace?
For steady freestyle, a comfortable fitness pace is around 2:00/100 m; 1:30–1:45 is a strong recreational swimmer, and national-level distance swimmers hold near 1:00.
Why convert between metres and yards?
US pools are often 25 yards while most of the world uses metres. A 100 m is about 9.4% longer than 100 yd, so the conversion keeps paces comparable across pools.
Does stroke count matter?
Yes — pace and strokes-per-length together describe efficiency. Holding the same pace with fewer strokes means better distance-per-stroke and usually less energy per lap.
