Safe Withdrawal Rate Calculator
See how much annual and monthly income a portfolio supports at a chosen safe withdrawal rate.
How it works
Annual income = portfolio × withdrawal rate ÷ 100
The safe withdrawal rate is the share of a portfolio you can draw yearly with low risk of running out. The classic "4% rule" from the Trinity study suggests about 4% initially, adjusted for inflation each year.
Worked example
A $1,000,000 portfolio at 4% supports $40,000 a year.
Frequently asked questions
Is 4% still safe?
It is a guideline from historical US data, not a guarantee. Some prefer 3–3.5% for long retirements or lower expected returns.
Does it adjust for inflation?
The rule takes the first-year amount and raises it with inflation each year — this shows that starting amount.
