Tattoo Aftercare Timeline Calculator
Build a healing timeline for a new tattoo — surface-healing date and full-healing window — based on size and skin type.
How it works
Surface healing ≈ 14 days (small), 21 (medium), 28 (large) + 4 days for dry/sensitive skin · Full healing 3–6 months
A tattoo heals in two layers on different clocks. The surface (epidermis) closes over in roughly two to four weeks, passing through oozing, scabbing and itchy peeling stages, after which it looks healed. The deeper dermis, where the ink actually sits, keeps remodelling for three to six months, which is why a fresh tattoo can look slightly cloudy until it fully settles. Larger pieces and dry or sensitive skin tend to take longer, and good aftercare — gentle washing, thin moisturiser, sun protection, no picking — matters more than any timeline.
Worked example
A medium tattoo on normal skin done on 10 Sep 2026 has a ~21-day surface-healing window, looking healed around 1 Oct 2026, with the peeling phase over roughly days 4–14 and full deep healing across the next 3–4 months.
Frequently asked questions
How long until my tattoo looks healed?
The surface usually looks healed in two to four weeks once scabbing and peeling finish. It can still be slightly shiny or cloudy until the deeper skin finishes healing over the following months.
When can I swim or sunbathe?
Avoid soaking (pools, baths, ocean) and direct sun until the surface is fully healed — commonly two to four weeks. After that, always use sunscreen, since UV fades ink over time.
Is peeling and itching normal?
Yes. Light flaking and itch during the first couple of weeks are part of normal healing — moisturise thinly and do not scratch or pick. Spreading redness, pus, or worsening pain, though, can signal infection and needs medical attention.
