Teaspoons to Tablespoons Converter
Convert teaspoons to tablespoons — US, metric, old UK teaspoons or millilitres into US, metric, Australian or UK tablespoons — with a spoon-by-spoon measuring breakdown, cups, fluid ounces, mL and the weight for common ingredients.
How it works
US tablespoons = teaspoons ÷ 3 · other tablespoons = teaspoons × 4.929 mL ÷ tablespoon size in mL · cups = teaspoons ÷ 48 · fluid ounces = teaspoons ÷ 6 · weight = teaspoons × grams per teaspoon
Three teaspoons make one tablespoon, so for US measures you simply divide by 3: 6 teaspoons is 2 tablespoons and 4½ teaspoons is 1½ tablespoons. Spoons are not the same size everywhere, though. The US teaspoon is 4.93 mL and the metric teaspoon 5 mL, close enough to swap in everyday cooking; old British recipes used a 5.92 mL teaspoon and a 17.76 mL tablespoon. The Australian tablespoon is the odd one out at 20 mL, which is four teaspoons, not three. Pick your spoon in the unit menu (or type millilitres) and the tablespoon size in its menu, and the calculator converts through millilitres. You also get the amount as whole tablespoons plus leftover teaspoons, the nearest fraction, cups, fluid ounces and millilitres, a quick-reference chart and a table of spoon sizes from a smidgen to a tablespoon. Under More options you can pick an ingredient — salt, baking soda, yeast, sugar, flour, spices, oils or honey — to see what the amount weighs.
Worked example
A spice blend calls for 12 teaspoons in total. Dividing by 3 gives 12 ÷ 3 = 4 tablespoons, which is 12 ÷ 48 = 0.25 cups, 12 ÷ 6 = 2 fluid ounces and about 12 × 4.93 = 59 mL. If a recipe instead needs 5 teaspoons, that is 1⅔ tablespoons, measured as 1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons. With an Australian 20 mL tablespoon, 12 US teaspoons (59 mL) is about 2.96 tablespoons.

Frequently asked questions
How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?
Three, in US, metric and old UK measures. So 1½ tablespoons is 4½ teaspoons and 2 tablespoons is 6 teaspoons. The exception is Australia, where a tablespoon is 20 mL, or 4 teaspoons.
How do I measure 2 teaspoons, or 5 teaspoons, with tablespoons?
Two teaspoons is ⅔ of a tablespoon — just use the teaspoon twice. Five teaspoons is 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons. The “Measure it as” line gives this spoon-by-spoon breakdown for any amount.
Is a teaspoon the same as the spoon I stir tea with?
No. A measuring teaspoon is a standard 5 mL (4.93 mL in the US), while everyday cutlery teaspoons hold anywhere from about 2.5 to 7 mL. Use a proper measuring spoon for salt, baking soda and baking powder, where small errors matter.
How much is a pinch or a dash?
Modern measuring-spoon sets define a dash as ⅛ teaspoon, a pinch as 1/16 teaspoon and a smidgen as 1/32 teaspoon. Older recipes use the words loosely, so treat them as “a little” and season to taste.
How many grams is a teaspoon?
It depends on the ingredient. A teaspoon of water weighs about 4.9 g, table salt about 6 g, granulated sugar about 4.2 g, baking powder about 4 g and flour only about 2.5 g. Pick the ingredient under More options to convert your amount.
