How it works

capacity = floor(width ÷ pad width) · area = length × width ÷ 144 (sq ft)

Manufacturer capacity ratings assume everyone lies shoulder-to-shoulder on 20-inch pads with no gear inside, which is why a “2-person” tent often feels tight. This calculator lets you pick a realistic per-person width — 25 inches is comfortable, 30 is roomy — and divides the floor width to get an honest count. A common rule is to “size down” one person from the rating for comfort, which this reproduces when you choose wider pads.

Worked example

A 90 × 60 in floor is 37.5 sq ft. At 20-in pads it fits 60 ÷ 20 = 3 across, so 3 people snug; at 30-in pads only 2 fit, giving each about 18.7 sq ft.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a 2-person tent feel small?

Ratings assume 20-inch sleeping pads touching edge to edge with no room for gear. Real 25-inch pads and a little elbow room usually drop the comfortable count by one person.

Where do I store gear?

Vestibules — the covered area outside the floor — are meant for packs and boots, so they are not counted in this floor-based capacity. A tent with large vestibules effectively sleeps its rated number more comfortably.

Does length matter?

Yes for tall sleepers: most pads are about 72–78 in long, so a floor under ~80 in can crowd anyone over six feet even if the width fits.
