How it works

bags = ceil( area ÷ coverage-per-bag × (1 + waste%) ) · coverage falls as trowel size rises

Thinset use is set by trowel size, which is chosen for the tile: small tiles use a 1/4 inch notch that spreads a 50 lb bag over roughly 95 square feet, while large-format tiles need a 1/2 or 3/4 inch notch that cuts coverage to 60 or 40 square feet. Divide the area by the coverage for your trowel and add waste for the mortar left on the board and mixing bucket.

Worked example

A 120 sq ft small-tile floor with a 1/4 inch trowel covers about 95 sq ft per bag: 120 ÷ 95 = 1.26 bags, and with 10% waste, 2 fifty-pound bags. The same floor in large-format tile at 40 sq ft per bag would need 4 bags.

Frequently asked questions

Why does tile size change the thinset amount?

Bigger tiles need a bigger trowel notch to bed fully and support the tile, and a bigger notch lays a thicker ridge of mortar. That is why large-format tile can use two to three times the thinset per square foot that mosaic or small tile does.

Should I back-butter tiles?

Large and heavy tiles are usually back-buttered in addition to the troweled bed, to guarantee full coverage and hit the 80–95% contact codes require. Back-buttering raises consumption, so lean toward the higher end of your waste allowance.

Modified or unmodified thinset?

That depends on the tile and substrate — many uncoupling membranes and porcelain tiles specify unmodified, while others call for modified. It changes the product, not the quantity this calculator estimates.
