Tip & Bill Split Calculator
Add a tip to a restaurant bill and split the total evenly across your group — see the per-person share down to the cent.
How it works
Tip = bill × tip% · Total = bill + tip · Per person = total ÷ people
The tip is a percentage of the pre-tip bill, then the tip is added back to get the grand total. Splitting divides that total — food plus tip — evenly among everyone at the table. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal rather than the tax-inclusive bill is the customary approach in the US, so if your bill already includes sales tax the true tip percentage on the food is a touch lower.
Worked example
On an $84.50 bill with an 18% tip, the tip is 84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21, so the total is $99.71. Split four ways, that is 99.71 ÷ 4 = $24.93 per person, of which $3.80 is tip.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
The standard convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the post-tax total is more generous and only adds a small amount, so either is fine — this tool tips on whatever bill figure you enter.
How much should I tip?
In US sit-down restaurants 15–20% is typical, with 18% a common default for good service and 20%+ for excellent service. Counter service and takeout usually warrant less or nothing.
How do I handle an uneven split?
This calculator splits evenly. For an itemized split, total each person’s dishes separately, apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal, and the parts will add up to the same grand total.
