How it works

Portion per food per meal ≈ 1 tablespoon (15 ml) per year of age · Dairy: 12–23 months 1⅔–2 cups, 2–3 years 2 cups, 4–5 years 2½ cups a day · Juice: ≤ 120 ml (1–3 y), 120–180 ml (4–6 y)

A toddler portion is roughly a quarter of an adult portion, and a simple rule used by pediatric dietitians is one tablespoon of each food per year of age at each meal — then let the child ask for more. Toddlers have small stomachs, so they eat 3 meals and 2–3 planned snacks. Daily dairy amounts follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020–2025, and the American Academy of Pediatrics limits 100% fruit juice to 4 oz (120 ml) a day at ages 1–3 and 4–6 oz at ages 4–6. Appetite varies a lot from day to day; growth over time is what counts.

Worked example

A 2-year-old starts with about 2 tbsp (30 ml) of each food per meal — 2 tablespoons of vegetables, fruit, rice and chicken — with 3 meals and 2–3 snacks a day, 2 cups (480 ml) of milk or dairy and no more than 120 ml of juice.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a 2-year-old eat at each meal?

Start with about 2 tablespoons of each food — vegetable, fruit, grain and protein — and offer more if they are still hungry. Over a day that adds up to roughly 1,000–1,400 kcal, depending on activity and growth.

My toddler barely eats — is that normal?

Yes. Appetite drops after the first year as growth slows, and toddlers often eat well one day and little the next. Offer regular meals and snacks, let them decide how much, and talk to your pediatrician if they are losing weight or seem unwell.

How much milk should a toddler drink?

About 1⅔–2 cups (400–480 ml) of dairy a day at 12–23 months, 2 cups at 2–3 years and 2½ cups at 4–5 years. More than about 700 ml (24 oz) of milk a day can crowd out food and raise the risk of iron deficiency.

Should toddlers drink juice?

It is not needed. If you offer 100% juice, the AAP limit is 4 oz (120 ml) a day for ages 1–3 and 4–6 oz for ages 4–6, served in a cup with a meal. Whole fruit is better.
