How it works

US size, foot length and EU size from age bands · Fit = measured length + ~0.5 in growth room

Toddler feet grow astonishingly fast — often a half size every two to three months in the first years — so age gives only a rough starting size. The reliable method is to measure the longest foot (heel to longest toe) and add about half an inch of wiggle room, because a shoe that fits perfectly today is snug within weeks. Use the age estimate to know which sizes to try, then confirm by measuring rather than buying on age alone.

Worked example

A 24-month-old typically wears a US size 6, about a 5.2 inch foot (EU 22). If you measure 5.2 inches, look for shoes fitting around 5.7 inches inside to leave a thumb’s width of growing room.

Frequently asked questions

What shoe size is a 2-year-old?

Most 2-year-olds wear a US toddler size 5–7, but the range is wide. Treat age as a guide to which sizes to try on and measure the foot to confirm — a half-inch difference is a full size at this age.

How often should I check a toddler’s shoe size?

Every 6–8 weeks in the first two years, then every 2–3 months. Feet can jump a half size quickly, and shoes that are too small can affect developing feet.

How much growing room should shoes have?

About a thumb’s width — roughly half an inch — between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Too much room causes tripping; too little cramps the foot.
