How it works

Vinegar = total × vinegar parts ÷ (vinegar + water parts) · Water = total − vinegar

A vinegar cleaner splits the bottle by parts: the vinegar share is the total times its parts over the sum of both. A 1:1 mix is a common all-purpose strength, while 1:3 is gentler for light jobs. Vinegar is mildly acidic and cuts grease, soap scum and hard-water spots, but never use it on natural stone (marble, granite, travertine) or unsealed grout, where the acid etches the surface — and never mix it with bleach.

Worked example

A 1:1 cleaner in a 16 fl oz bottle is 8 fl oz vinegar and 8 fl oz water, plus about 20 drops of essential oil (roughly 10 per cup) to soften the smell.

Frequently asked questions

What surfaces should I avoid with vinegar?

Skip natural stone like marble and granite, unsealed grout, waxed or oiled wood, and some electronics screens. The acid can etch, dull or strip these. On those surfaces use a pH-neutral cleaner instead.

What ratio works best?

A 1:1 vinegar-to-water mix is a strong all-purpose cleaner; 1:3 is gentler for glass and light dusting. Stronger mixes cut grease and mineral deposits better but leave more of the vinegar smell until it dries off.

Can I add dish soap too?

A drop of dish soap boosts grease-cutting, but do not combine vinegar with bleach or hydrogen peroxide in the same bottle. Essential oils are a safe way to improve the scent.
