How it works

Category = VO2max ÷ age/sex "good" midpoint · Superior ≥1.25 · Excellent ≥1.12 · Good ≥1.00 · Fair ≥0.88

VO2max measures the maximum oxygen your body can use per kilogram per minute — the single best lab marker of aerobic fitness. Because it declines with age and differs by sex, a raw number means little without a reference; this tool compares yours to a typical "good" value for your decade and sex. Values here are approximate norms, useful for placing yourself in a band rather than a precise percentile.

Worked example

A 35-year-old man with VO2max 45 is compared to a ~43 midpoint. 45 ÷ 43 = 1.05, which is at least 1.00, so he lands in the "Good" category, about 5% above the reference.

Frequently asked questions

How is VO2max measured?

The gold standard is a graded exercise test with a gas-analysis mask, but field tests (the Cooper 12-minute run, a 1.5-mile run, or a submaximal step test) and many fitness watches estimate it well enough for tracking.

Why does VO2max fall with age?

Maximum heart rate, stroke volume and muscle oxygen extraction all decline gradually with age, so peak oxygen use drops roughly 8–10% per decade in untrained adults — less if you keep training.

Can I improve my category?

Yes. Consistent aerobic training, especially intervals near your max, can raise VO2max 10–20% over months, which can move you up a full category for your age group.
