How it works

months = (current waist − goal waist) ÷ rate per month · rough weight ≈ inches × 8 lb

Waist circumference is one of the best simple indicators of abdominal fat and metabolic risk, often more telling than weight alone. This tool divides the inches you want to lose by a realistic monthly rate to estimate a timeline, and gives a rough weight-loss figure using the common rule of thumb that roughly 8 lb of fat loss trims about an inch off the waist. Because you cannot spot-reduce, waist size falls as part of overall fat loss.

Worked example

Going from a 38 in to a 34 in waist is 4 inches. At half an inch a month that is 8 months, roughly 35 weeks, and implies about 32 lb of loss at the 8-lb-per-inch guideline.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose belly fat specifically?

No — spot reduction is a myth. Targeted ab exercises build muscle but do not preferentially burn the fat over them. Waist size drops as you lose fat everywhere through a calorie deficit.

How is the weight-loss estimate calculated?

It uses a rough rule of thumb that about 8 lb of fat loss corresponds to roughly one inch off the waist. Individual results vary widely with genetics, starting size and where you store fat.

What waist size is considered healthy?

General guidance flags higher risk above about 40 in for men and 35 in for women, though these thresholds vary by population. A waist under half your height is a simple healthy target.
