How it works

Average price = budget ÷ items · Wears per item = average price ÷ target cost per wear · Total wears = budget ÷ target CPW

Cost per wear reframes clothing spending around use, not sticker price: a $200 coat worn 100 times costs $2 a wear, cheaper than a $20 top worn twice. Working backwards from a budget and a target cost per wear tells you the average price you can afford per item and the commitment each purchase implies. Pieces you cannot realistically wear that often are the ones blowing the budget.

Worked example

A $1,200 yearly budget spread over 30 items averages $40 per item. To keep every piece at a $5 cost per wear, each one has to be worn about 8 times — roughly twice a month over a season. The whole budget should buy about 240 wears of use.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good cost per wear?

For everyday basics, $1–$5 per wear is a reasonable target; for occasion or investment pieces, $10–$20 can be fine if the quality lasts. Lower is better, but the honest test is whether you will actually wear it that often.

How does this help me shop?

Before buying, divide the price by the number of times you realistically expect to wear the item. If that exceeds your target, either it needs to earn its place in heavy rotation or it is too expensive for how you will use it.

Does cost per wear favour expensive clothes?

Only if they get worn. A durable, versatile piece you reach for constantly wins on cost per wear; an expensive item worn twice is the worst value of all. Frequency of wear matters more than price.
