How it works

Attending = guests × attendance% · Givers = attending × gift-rate% · Total = givers × average gift

Total gift value flows from three numbers: how many invited guests actually attend, what share of them give something, and how much a typical gift is worth. Attendance is usually well below the invite count, and not every attendee brings a gift, so the total is far more sensitive to the guest list than to the headline registry price. Use it to gauge how much of your wedding or first-home costs gifts might realistically offset — not as a target to demand.

Worked example

For 120 invites at 80% attendance, that is 96 guests; if 90% give ($150 average), about 86 givers yield roughly $13,000 in total gift value.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical wedding gift amount?

It varies widely by region, relationship and local custom, commonly ranging from about $75 to $200 per guest, with close family and couples often giving more. Adjust the average to match your circles.

Should I count on gifts to fund the wedding?

No. Gifts are a bonus, not a budget line — attendance, generosity and the mix of guests are all uncertain. Plan the wedding around what you can afford, and treat gifts as help toward your next goals.

How many registry items should I add?

A common guideline is roughly two to three gift options per invited guest across a range of price points, so there is always something available whatever a giver wants to spend.
