How it works

count = full weeks in the inclusive range (each weekday once) + the leftover days, whose weekdays are counted individually

The inclusive span is split into whole weeks plus a remainder. Every full week contributes exactly one of each weekday, so the base count is the number of full weeks; the leftover days, starting from the range’s first weekday, add at most one extra to the weekdays they land on. That is why a common year has 52 or 53 of each weekday. Both endpoints are counted, matching “how many Mondays in this period” style questions.

Worked example

Across all of 2026 (365 inclusive days = 52 weeks and 1 day), every weekday occurs 52 times, and the single leftover day — a Thursday, since 2026 begins on a Thursday — makes 53 Thursdays.

Frequently asked questions

Are both the start and end dates counted?

Yes — the range is inclusive, so a start or end date that lands on your chosen weekday is included. That matches everyday phrasing like “how many paydays this period”.

Why 53 of one weekday in a year?

A 365-day year is 52 weeks plus one extra day, so exactly one weekday — whichever the year starts on — occurs 53 times. A leap year has two such weekdays.

Can I count working days this way?

Add the Monday-to-Friday tallies for a weekday breakdown of working days, but note it does not remove public holidays — a business days calculator is better for that.
