Count the weekdays (Monday–Friday) between two dates — weekends removed, holidays left in.
How it works
business days = calendar days in the range − Saturdays − Sundays (both end dates included)
The count includes every Monday-to-Friday date in the range, with both the start and end dates counted when they fall on a weekday. Public holidays are NOT subtracted — they differ by country, state and even employer, so subtract the ones on your own calendar from the result. Full weeks contribute exactly five days each, and only the leftover partial week depends on which weekday the range starts on.
Worked example
January 1 through January 31, 2026 spans 31 calendar days. January 2026 has five Saturdays and four Sundays — 9 weekend days — leaving 22 business days, before removing the New Year’s Day holiday yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Are public holidays excluded?
No — deliberately. Holiday calendars vary by country, region and industry, so this counts pure weekdays. Subtract the holidays that fall on weekdays in your range (US federal holidays, for example, add up to 11 per year).
Is the start date counted?
Yes — both endpoints are included when they land on a weekday. For “working days after” a date, as deadlines are often phrased, subtract 1 from the result if the start date is a weekday.
How many working days does a typical year have?
A 365-day year contains 52 full weeks plus one day, giving 260 or 261 weekdays before holidays. After 10–11 public holidays, most full-time calendars land near 250 working days.
