Weighted GPA Points Calculator
Add up grade points weighted by course credit hours to compute a GPA — the credit-weighted average behind every transcript.
How it works
Quality points = Σ (grade points × credits) · GPA = Σ quality points ÷ Σ credits
A GPA is not a plain average of grade points — it is an average weighted by how many credit hours each course carries, so a four-credit course pulls the GPA more than a one-credit course. You multiply each grade’s point value by its credits to get "quality points", sum those, and divide by total credits. This is exactly how registrars compute the number on a transcript.
Worked example
Course 1: 4.0 × 3 = 12. Course 2: 3.0 × 4 = 12. Course 3: 3.7 × 2 = 7.4. Total quality points 31.4 over 9 credits gives a GPA of 31.4 ÷ 9 ≈ 3.489.
Frequently asked questions
Why weight grades by credit hours?
Because courses are not equal in size. A four-credit course represents more of your workload than a one-credit lab, so it should count more toward the GPA. Weighting by credits reflects that.
What are quality points?
Quality points are a course’s grade points multiplied by its credit hours. Summing them across all courses and dividing by total credits gives the GPA — quality points are the numerator of that fraction.
Does this handle honors or AP weighting?
Yes — if your school gives honors or AP courses a boosted scale (for example A = 5.0), just enter that boosted grade-point value for those courses and the credit weighting does the rest.
