How it works

Total area = area × coats · Quarts = total area ÷ coverage × (1 + waste) · Round up to the next half-quart

Stain coverage is quoted as area per quart on a smooth, sealed surface; multiplying your project area by the number of coats gives the total area the stain must cover. Porous and rough woods drink stain far faster than the label figure, so a waste and soak-in margin is essential — end grain and unsanded softwoods can halve the effective coverage. Because stain is sold in fixed can sizes, the practical answer rounds up so you finish the job from one dye lot rather than risk a colour mismatch on a top-up can.

Worked example

A 120 ft² project getting 2 coats covers 240 ft² of application. At 125 ft²/qt that is 1.92 qt, and with a 10% soak-in margin about 2.11 qt — rounded up you buy 2.5 qt (0.53 gal).

Frequently asked questions

Why is my real coverage lower than the can says?

Label figures assume smooth, sanded, non-porous wood. Raw softwoods, end grain and open-grain species like oak absorb much more, so treat published coverage as a best case and keep the margin generous.

Do I count both coats?

Yes. Each coat covers the full area again, though second coats often go a little further. This calculator multiplies area by coats so the estimate reflects the whole job.

Gel stain vs liquid — same amount?

No. Gel stains sit on the surface and typically cover less area per quart than penetrating liquid stains. Enter the coverage figure from your specific product.
