How it works

Score = 0.3·work factor + 0.3·personal factor + 0.2·sleep factor + 0.2·boundary factor · work factor = 100 − 4·(hours − 40) · personal factor = personal hours ÷ 25 × 100 · sleep factor = 100 − 20·|sleep − 8|

Balance is not just about working fewer hours — it is the mix of work, personal time, rest and the ability to switch off. Each of the four inputs is scored 0–100 against a healthy target (a ~40-hour week, roughly 25 hours a week for yourself, 7–9 hours of sleep, and clean after-hours boundaries) and then blended with weights. Work and personal time carry the most weight because they are the biggest daily trade-off.

Worked example

At 45 work hours the work factor is 100 − 4×5 = 80; 20 personal hours gives 20 ÷ 25 × 100 = 80; 7 h sleep gives 100 − 20×1 = 80; "Sometimes" disconnecting (2 of 4) gives 50. Blended: 0.3×80 + 0.3×80 + 0.2×80 + 0.2×50 = 74.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 40 hours the reference point?

A 40-hour week is a widely used full-time baseline in many countries. The score does not punish it, but it starts to fall as weekly hours climb well past it, since long weeks are strongly linked to poorer wellbeing.

I work part-time — does that guarantee a high score?

No. Short work hours help the work factor, but low personal time, poor sleep or never disconnecting can still pull the overall score down. Balance is about the whole mix.

What is a good target score?

Aim for 60 or above, and watch the individual factors — a single weak area (like sleep or boundaries) is often the most useful thing to work on first.
