Average Needed to Pass Calculator
Find the average score you need on your remaining assignments to finish a course at or above a target grade.
How it works
Needed = (target − current × done_weight) ÷ (1 − done_weight)
Your final grade is a weighted average of the work already graded and the work still to come. Rearranging that average for the unknown piece tells you the score you must average on everything remaining. A negative answer means the target is already locked in; an answer above 100% means it is mathematically out of reach with the weight left.
Worked example
With a 68% average over the 60% of the grade done so far and a 70% target, you need (70 − 68×0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (70 − 40.8) ÷ 0.40 = 73% on the remaining 40% of the course.
Frequently asked questions
What does a negative required average mean?
It means you have already earned enough to hit the target no matter what you score on the rest — even a zero keeps you at or above it.
Why can the required score be over 100%?
Because the remaining work does not carry enough weight to make up the gap. When the answer exceeds 100%, the target is unreachable and you would need to aim lower or seek extra credit.
Is "weight completed" the same as how many assignments are done?
Only if every assignment counts equally. Use the share of the final grade that is already graded — a 40%-weighted final still to come means 60% is completed even if it is just one exam left.
