Letter Grade List GPA Calculator
Type in a list of letter grades and get the unweighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale, plus the average grade point.
How it works
GPA = sum of grade points ÷ number of courses (each course equally weighted)
Each letter grade maps to a point on the 4.0 scale — A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on down to F = 0. An unweighted GPA is just the plain average of those points, treating every course as equal. This is the quick version; a credit-weighted GPA multiplies each course by its credit hours, which matters when courses differ in size.
Worked example
Grades of A, B+, A−, B, C+ map to 4.0, 3.3, 3.7, 3.0, 2.3. Their sum is 16.3 over 5 courses, giving a GPA of 16.3 ÷ 5 = 3.26.
Frequently asked questions
Does this weight courses by credit hours?
No — this is an unweighted GPA where every course counts equally. If your courses carry different credit hours, use a credit-weighted GPA calculator for an official figure.
Which grades are recognized?
A+, A, A− through D+, D, D−, and F, using the standard 4.0 mapping. Plus and minus adjust the point value by 0.3. Anything it does not recognize is listed as ignored.
How are A and A+ scored?
On the common 4.0 scale both A and A+ equal 4.0; the scale is capped there. Some schools award 4.3 for an A+ — check your institution's policy.
