Semester GPA From Letter Grades Calculator
Enter this semester’s letter grades and credit hours to get your term GPA on the 4.0 scale.
How it works
semester GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
Each letter grade converts to points on the 4.0 scale, and every course contributes its points multiplied by its credit hours. The term GPA is that credit-weighted average, so a 4-credit course pulls harder than a 1-credit elective with the same letter. This is the single-term number that later rolls into your cumulative GPA.
Worked example
A 4.0, a 3.7 (4 cr) and a 3.0, all others 3 cr: points = 4.0×3 + 3.7×4 + 3.0×3 + 3.3×3 = 12 + 14.8 + 9 + 9.9 = 45.7 over 13 credits, so GPA = 45.7 ÷ 13 = 3.52.
Frequently asked questions
What does "credits attempted" mean here?
It is the sum of credit hours for the courses that received a letter grade. Pass/fail or withdrawn courses carry no grade points, so leave them set to "not taken".
How does semester GPA feed into cumulative GPA?
Your cumulative GPA is a credit-weighted blend of every term. Take this semester’s GPA and credits into the cumulative GPA update calculator to see the new running average.
My school gives A+ a 4.3 — can I match that?
This tool caps A at 4.0, the most common convention. If your school awards 4.3 for A+, the true GPA can be slightly higher; check your registrar’s point table.
