Badminton Match Scoring Projection Calculator
Project your chance of winning a best-of-three badminton match from your single-game win probability, plus the likely number of games.
How it works
Match win % = g² × (3 − 2g), where g = single-game win probability · Expected games = 2 + 2g(1 − g)
Badminton matches are played best-of-three games to 21 (win by two, capped at 30). If your probability of winning any one game is g and games are independent, winning the match means winning two before your opponent does. That gives a match probability of g²(3 − 2g), which amplifies even a small per-game edge: a 55% game-winner wins the match about 57.5% of the time. The expected number of games peaks at 2.5 when the players are evenly matched and drops toward two as one side dominates.
Worked example
With a 55% single-game win probability: match win = 0.55² × (3 − 2×0.55) = 0.3025 × 1.9 = 0.575, about 57.5%. Expected games = 2 + 2×0.55×0.45 = 2.50.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my match chance higher than my game chance?
Best-of-three formats reward the stronger player: needing two of three games means a favourite has more opportunities for their edge to show, so a 55% game edge grows to about 57.5% at match level.
Does this assume every game is equally likely to be won?
Yes — it treats games as independent with the same probability g. Real momentum and fatigue can shift later games, but the independent model is the standard, unbiased baseline.
How do I estimate my single-game win probability?
Use your head-to-head history against similar opponents, or a rating-based expectancy. Even a rough figure gives a useful match projection because the formula is smooth.
