How it works

seat height = counter height − 25 to 30 cm (10–12″) · stools = counter length ÷ space per stool (61 cm / 24″ standard) · knee space (NKBA): 46 cm at table height, 38 cm at counter height, 30 cm at bar height

For comfortable seating there should be 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) between the seat and the underside of the counter, so a standard 91 cm (36″) kitchen counter takes a counter-height stool of 61–66 cm (24–26″) and a 107 cm (42″) bar takes a bar-height stool of 76–81 cm (30–32″). The National Kitchen & Bath Association planning guidelines allow 61 cm (24″) of counter length per seated person and knee space of 46 cm (18″) at table height, 38 cm (15″) at counter height and 30 cm (12″) at bar height. Stools with arms or swivel seats need 71–76 cm (28–30″) each.

Worked example

A 91 cm (36″) kitchen island with 240 cm of seating length: seat height = 91 − 30 to 91 − 25 = 61–66 cm, a counter-height stool. At 61 cm per slim stool, 240 ÷ 61 = 3.9, so 3 stools fit, and the counter should overhang 38 cm for knee space.

Frequently asked questions

What height bar stool do I need for a 36 inch counter?

A counter-height stool with a 24–26 inch (61–66 cm) seat. For a 42 inch bar you need a bar-height stool with a 30–32 inch (76–81 cm) seat.

What is the difference between counter stools and bar stools?

Counter stools have a seat around 24–26 inches high for standard 36 inch kitchen counters; bar stools are about 30 inches high for 40–42 inch bars and pub tables. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake.

How many stools fit at my island?

Allow 24 inches (61 cm) of counter per stool for slim or backless stools and 28–30 inches (71–76 cm) for stools with arms or swivels. A 6 ft (183 cm) island seats 3 slim stools or 2 wide ones.

How much counter overhang do I need for stools?

NKBA recommends 15 inches (38 cm) of knee space at counter height, 12 inches (30 cm) at bar height and 18 inches (46 cm) at table height. Overhangs over about 25 cm usually need support brackets.
