How it works

Side clearance = (kitchen width − island width) ÷ 2 · End clearance = (kitchen length − island length) ÷ 2 · Guideline minimum = 42 in (48 in for two cooks)

The National Kitchen & Bath Association recommends at least 42 inches of walkway around a kitchen island so one person can open cabinets and appliances, and 48 inches where two people work at once. Centering the island splits the leftover floor evenly, so each clearance is half the difference between the room and island dimension. The tightest of the four gaps is what actually limits comfort and dictates whether the layout works.

Worked example

A 40 × 80 inch island centered in a 144 × 180 inch kitchen leaves (144 − 40) ÷ 2 = 52 inches on the sides and (180 − 80) ÷ 2 = 50 inches at the ends — a tightest walkway of 50 inches, comfortably above the 42-inch minimum.

Frequently asked questions

How much clearance does a kitchen island need?

The NKBA guideline is a minimum of 42 inches of walkway on all sides, increasing to 48 inches for kitchens where two people cook together or where the aisle is also a main traffic path.

What is the smallest kitchen that fits an island?

To keep 42-inch aisles around even a compact 24 × 40 inch island you need roughly 108 inches (9 feet) in each direction. Below that, a peninsula or cart is usually a better fit.

Does the 42-inch rule include appliance doors?

The 42 inches is the standing walkway; you also want enough room for an oven, dishwasher or fridge door to open fully across the aisle, which can call for more space on that side.
