Beep Test VO₂ Max Calculator
Convert a 20 m multistage shuttle-run (beep test) result — level and shuttle — into estimated VO₂ max, running speed and total distance, with a fitness rating.
How it works
Speed = 8 + 0.5 × level (km/h); VO₂max ≈ −24.4 + 6.0 × speed (adults, Léger 1988)
The multistage fitness test starts at 8.5 km/h and speeds up 0.5 km/h each level; the speed at which you drop out predicts maximal oxygen uptake. Léger’s adult equation is used here (a separate age-adjusted version for under-18s). Norms vary with age and sex; elite endurance athletes exceed 70, while many team-sport players test between 50 and 60 (levels 11–13).
Worked example
Level 10.5 for a 25-year-old man: speed ≈ 13.2 km/h → VO₂ max ≈ 55 — excellent; about 1,760 m covered.
Frequently asked questions
What level do police and military require?
Commonly 5.4 to 8.8 depending on the force and role; elite units expect 12+.
Why do apps give slightly different VO₂ values?
Several regression equations exist (Léger, Ramsbottom, Flouris); differences of 2–3 mL/kg/min are normal.
