How it works

Total = bill + bill×tax% + bill×tip% · Per person = total ÷ people

The standard convention is to tip on the pre-tax bill, then add the sales tax separately, and finally divide the grand total evenly. Tipping before tax is customary in the U.S. because tax is not part of the service you are rewarding. Splitting the total rather than each line item keeps the arithmetic simple and fair when everyone shares roughly equally.

Worked example

An $84 bill with 8% tax and an 18% tip: tax is $6.72, tip is $15.12, so the total is $105.84. Split four ways, each person pays $26.46.

Frequently asked questions

Should the tip be calculated on the bill before or after tax?

Convention is to tip on the pre-tax bill, which is what this tool does. Tipping on the post-tax amount is more generous but not expected.

What if people ordered very different amounts?

An even split is fairest when orders are similar. For lopsided tables, split each person's own items and apply the same tax and tip percentages to each subtotal.

How do I leave a round per-person number?

Nudge the tip percentage up until the per-person figure lands where you like, or round each person's share up and let the extra pad the tip.
