How it works

top area = π·r² (round) / side² (square) / length × width (sheet) · servings = area ÷ slice footprint (2–4 sq in, smaller for taller cakes)

A cake is cut across its top, so servings come from top area, not volume — and the slice footprint you can get away with shrinks as the cake gets taller and richer. These estimates follow the widely used Wilton convention: roughly a 2"×1.5" (3 sq in) piece for a two-layer party cake, down to a 2"×1" (2 sq in) sliver for tall wedding tiers. A single thin layer wants a bigger 2"×2" footprint, so it feeds fewer people per pan.

Worked example

A 9-inch round two-layer cake has a top area of π × 4.5² ≈ 63.6 sq in. At a 3 sq in party footprint that is about 21 servings, or up to about 32 thin wedding slices at 2 sq in each.

Frequently asked questions

Why does adding layers increase the serving count?

Because a taller cake gives each guest more cake per square inch of top, so you cut smaller footprints and get more slices from the same pan. Two layers is the standard party assumption; a single layer feeds fewer people because the slices have to be wider to feel substantial.

Party servings vs. wedding servings — what is the difference?

Just slice size. "Party" slices are generous everyday pieces (about 3 sq in of top); "wedding" or "dessert" slices are the smaller, formal cuts (about 2 sq in) plated at receptions where cake is one of several sweets. Same cake, different knife discipline.

How much batter do I need for a bigger pan?

Scale batter by top area, not diameter — area grows with the square of the size, so a 10-inch round holds noticeably more than a 9-inch. The cake pan converter turns one pan’s recipe into another’s batter amount.
