Christmas Gift Budget Calculator
Add up your whole holiday gift budget from the number of people, an average gift, wrapping and shipping — and see the true cost per person.
How it works
Total = people × (avg gift + wrapping) + shipping · Per person = total ÷ people
The sticker price of the gifts is only part of holiday spending. Wrapping paper, cards and postage add a per-gift overhead that quietly inflates the total, so a $40 gift can easily cost $45 by the time it is wrapped and shipped. Multiplying that all-in figure by your list length gives a realistic number to save toward before the season starts.
Worked example
For 8 people at $40 each, gifts total $320. Add $3 of wrapping per gift ($24) and $25 of shipping and the budget is $369 — about $46 per person, not the $40 the gifts alone suggested.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I spend on Christmas gifts?
A common guideline is to keep total holiday spending — gifts, travel and food — under about 1.5% of your annual income, but the right number is whatever you can cover without carrying a balance into the new year. Set the total first, then divide it across your list.
Why is the per-person cost higher than my average gift?
Because wrapping, cards and shipping are real costs spread across every gift. This calculator folds them in so the per-person figure reflects what each recipient actually costs you.
How do I stop overspending at the holidays?
Decide the total budget before you shop, divide it by your list, and treat the per-person figure as a cap. Saving a fixed amount each month from the summer onward turns a large December bill into a manageable habit.
