How it works

Remaining = trip cost − already saved · Monthly = remaining ÷ months

Turning a trip cost into a savings target is just the remaining amount divided by the months you have left. Breaking that monthly figure down into a weekly or daily amount makes it easier to compare against everyday spending — a $333 monthly goal is about $11 a day, roughly the price of a takeout lunch. Booking flights and accommodation earlier usually lowers the total cost, which in turn shrinks every one of these figures.

Worked example

A $3,600 trip with $600 already saved leaves $3,000 to find. Over 9 months that is $333 a month, about $77 a week or $11 a day.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I save each month for a vacation?

Divide what you still need by the number of months until departure. This calculator does that and also shows the weekly and daily equivalents, which are often easier to stick to.

Should I keep vacation savings separate?

A dedicated savings account for the trip keeps the money from being spent on other things and lets you watch progress toward the goal. A high-yield account also earns a little interest while you save.

What if the trip is sooner than I can save for?

Either raise the monthly amount, trim the trip cost, or push the date back. The calculator shows immediately how each change affects the amount you need to set aside.
