How it works
Coffee grams = water (ml) ÷ ratio
Brew strength is set by the coffee-to-water ratio. 1:15 is strong, 1:17 is lighter; most pour-over guides land around 1:16. Since 1 ml of water is 1 g, the math is simply water divided by the ratio.
Worked example
500 ml at 1:16 needs about 31 g of coffee.
Frequently asked questions
What ratio is best?
1:15 to 1:17 suits most filter coffee. Espresso is far stronger, around 1:2.
Should I weigh or scoop?
Weighing is far more consistent. A level tablespoon is roughly 5–7 g, so scoops vary a lot.
