How it works

Subtotal = sum of item costs · Total = subtotal × (1 + contingency%)

Furnishing a dorm room is a burst of one-time spending that is easy to underestimate because it arrives item by item. Listing each category makes the total visible before the first shopping trip and shows where the money actually goes — electronics usually dominate. The contingency buffer covers the small forgotten purchases (a fan, extra cables, a shower caddy) that always appear once you arrive.

Worked example

With $200 bedding, $900 electronics, $150 storage, $180 appliances and $170 supplies, the subtotal is $1,600. A 10% buffer adds $160, for a $1,760 move-in budget.

Frequently asked questions

What are the biggest move-in expenses?

Electronics — usually a laptop — are typically the single largest line, followed by bedding and a mini-fridge or microwave. Many students already own the laptop, which changes the budget dramatically.

How can I keep move-in costs down?

Coordinate with roommates so you don’t both buy a fridge and microwave, check what the dorm already provides, buy storage and decor secondhand, and wait until you arrive to buy bulky items you might not need.

Is move-in cost separate from tuition and housing?

Yes. This is the one-time cost of outfitting the room and is on top of tuition, the housing fee and the meal plan. Budget for it as a distinct, upfront expense.
