College Tuition Total Calculator
Add tuition, fees, room and board and books across every year to get the full sticker price of a degree.
How it works
per-year cost = tuition + fees + room & board + books · total = per-year cost × years of study
The published "cost of attendance" is more than tuition: fees, housing, meals and books often rival or exceed the tuition line, especially at public schools where tuition is subsidised. Summing every category and multiplying by the number of years gives the full sticker price before any aid. It is a today’s-dollars figure — real bills climb with annual increases, so treat it as a floor rather than the final number.
Worked example
Tuition $12,000, fees $1,500, room and board $11,000 and books $1,200 come to $25,700 a year. Over four years that is $25,700 × 4 = $102,800, of which $54,000 is tuition and fees and $48,800 is living and supplies.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the amount I will actually pay?
No — it is the sticker price before aid. Grants, scholarships and need-based aid reduce it to your "net price", which is often far lower. Use the scholarship gap calculator to subtract aid and see the amount you must actually fund.
Should I include annual price increases?
This tool uses today’s prices for simplicity. If you are projecting costs several years out, run the college cost calculator, which inflates each year’s price to the year you enrol.
Why include room and board if I live at home?
If you commute, set room and board to your real living costs — often just meals and transport — or zero. The point is to capture the total cost of attending, not only what you pay the school.
