Cost Per Credit Hour Calculator
Break tuition down to a per-credit-hour price so you can compare schools and price out a single course.
How it works
cost per credit = tuition ÷ credit hours · with fees = (tuition + flat fees) ÷ credit hours
Reducing a term bill to a per-credit price makes very different schools comparable and shows the marginal cost of adding or dropping a class. Pure per-credit schools bill tuition directly by the hour, but most add flat per-term fees, so spreading those over your credit load gives a truer all-in rate. Note that a lighter load raises the per-credit fee share, which is one reason full-time enrolment is often the better value.
Worked example
Tuition of $6,000 for 15 credits is $6,000 ÷ 15 = $400 per credit hour. Adding $600 of flat fees gives $6,600 ÷ 15 = $440 per credit, so a 3-credit course works out to about $1,200 in tuition alone.
Frequently asked questions
Why does dropping a class barely lower my bill?
Many schools charge a flat "full-time" tuition for a band of credits (say 12–18), so within that band extra credits are effectively free and dropping one saves nothing. Per-credit pricing only applies cleanly below full-time or at schools that bill by the hour.
Should fees be included in the per-credit cost?
For comparing the true cost of attendance, yes — the "including fees" line spreads flat fees across your credits. For pricing one extra course, use the tuition-only per-credit figure, since flat fees do not change when you add a class.
How do I compare an in-state and out-of-state school?
Compute the per-credit-including-fees figure for each. Because credit loads and fee structures differ, the per-credit rate is a fairer comparison than the headline annual tuition.
