Cook Start Time Calculator
Work backwards from when you want the meal on the table — enter cook time, resting and prep to find exactly when to start.
How it works
start cooking = finish − resting − cook time · start prep = start cooking − prep time · rest begins = finish − resting time
Getting a meal to the table on time is a countdown, not a count-up. Resting matters most: a roast that needs 20 minutes to rest must come out of the oven 20 minutes before serving, so its cooking has to start earlier still. Subtract resting, then cook time, then prep from the target serve time and you get the moment to begin. When a big holiday roast pushes the start time before midnight, the result flags the previous day.
Worked example
To serve at 6:30 PM with 90 minutes cooking, 20 minutes resting and 25 minutes prep: rest begins at 6:10, so cooking must start at 4:40 PM and prep at 4:15 PM — 2 hours 15 minutes of work in total.
Frequently asked questions
Why does resting time push my start earlier?
Because the dish must finish cooking before it rests. If it rests for 20 minutes and you serve at 6:30, it has to leave the heat at 6:10, which means it went on 20 minutes sooner than a no-rest dish would.
Can I plan a turkey or large roast with this?
Yes — put the total roasting time in the cook field and the standing time in resting. For per-pound roasting times, pair it with a turkey or roast cooking-time calculator, then bring that number here.
What if the start time lands the day before?
For very long cooks the calculator marks “previous day”, telling you to start the night before to hit the serve time.
