How it works

Fee (coin) = gas price (gwei) × gas units ÷ 1,000,000,000 · Fee ($) = fee (coin) × coin price

An on-chain fee is simply the gas price you bid multiplied by how many gas units the transaction consumes. Gas price is quoted in gwei, and one gwei is a billionth of the native coin, so the product is divided by 10⁹ to get the fee in coin. Simple transfers use a fixed 21,000 gas while smart-contract calls like swaps or mints use far more, which is why the dollar cost of a "small" transaction can still be large when the network is busy.

Worked example

A standard transfer using 21,000 gas at 30 gwei costs 30 × 21,000 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 0.00063 coin. At a $3,000 coin price that is 0.00063 × 3,000 = $1.89.

Frequently asked questions

What is gwei?

Gwei is a denomination of the native coin used to quote gas prices — one gwei equals 0.000000001 (10⁻⁹) coin. Pricing gas in gwei keeps the numbers readable, since a raw fee in whole coins would be a tiny fraction.

Why do fees change minute to minute?

Most chains set the base fee by how full recent blocks are, so when demand for block space rises the gas price climbs. Your fee also includes a priority tip you choose to get included faster, so the same transaction can cost very different amounts at different times.

How many gas units will my transaction use?

A native coin transfer is fixed at 21,000 gas. Contract interactions vary — a token transfer is often 40,000–65,000 and a DEX swap can exceed 150,000 — so wallets estimate the gas limit before you sign.
