How it works

Power cost/day = (watts ÷ 1000) × 24 × $/kWh · Net revenue = coin revenue × (1 − pool fee%) · Profit/day = net revenue − power cost

Mining profit is coin revenue minus the two costs that scale with running the hardware: the pool fee taken off the top and the electricity the rig burns. Because power cost is fixed by your watts and tariff while coin revenue swings with price and difficulty, electricity is what usually decides whether a rig is worth switching on. When the daily profit turns negative, the rig is burning more in power than the coins are worth.

Worked example

A 3,000 W rig earning $6/day of coins at a 1% pool fee nets $5.94 of revenue. It draws (3000 ÷ 1000) × 24 = 72 kWh a day, costing 72 × $0.12 = $8.64. Profit is $5.94 − $8.64 = −$2.70 a day, so at these rates the rig loses money.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include the cost of the mining hardware?

No — this is an operating-profit view that compares daily coin revenue against electricity and pool fees. To judge whether the rig ever pays back its purchase price, divide the hardware cost by the daily profit to get the break-even days.

Why does electricity price matter so much?

Power is the one cost that runs 24 hours a day regardless of coin price. A rig that is comfortably profitable at $0.06/kWh can lose money at $0.20/kWh with no change in revenue, which is why cheap power is the single biggest factor in mining economics.

How does mining difficulty affect this?

Rising network difficulty lowers the coins your fixed hash rate earns, which shows up here as lower daily coin revenue. Re-run the calculator with a fresh revenue figure whenever difficulty or coin price moves.
