How it works

days remaining = last day of the year − the date (+1 to count the date itself) · day of year = date − first day of the year + 1 · percent complete = days passed ÷ days in the year × 100 (366 in a leap year) · weekdays left = Mondays–Fridays after the date up to the last day

The days left in the year are the gap between your date and December 31 of the same year, while the day-of-year number counts from January 1 as day 1. The two add up to the length of the year, which is 366 in a leap year and 365 otherwise. The percentage complete divides the days passed by that length, so it reads 50% around the start of July. By default the chosen date counts as passed, which suits checking in the evening; switch on “Count the date itself as remaining” to include it. The calculator also shows the time left in weeks, months and hours, splits it into weekdays and weekend days, and gives the days left in the current month and quarter. A month-by-month table and chart show how the remaining days are spread, and a milestones table lists the end of the month and quarter, the halfway point and the last day of the year. Choose “Fiscal year” to count to the end of a fiscal year instead, such as September 30 for the US federal government or March 31 or June 30 elsewhere.

Worked example

On October 18, 2026 (not a leap year), January–September have 273 days, so October 18 is day 291 of 365. That leaves 365 − 291 = 74 days until December 31: 10 weeks and 4 days, or 2 months and 13 days, or 1,776 hours. Of those 74 days, 54 are weekdays and 20 are weekend days (10 Saturdays and 10 Sundays), and the year is 291 ÷ 365 = 79.7% complete. In the US federal fiscal year, which ended on September 30, the same date is day 18 of FY2027, with 347 days left.

Frequently asked questions

Does the count include today?

Not by default. Days remaining counts the days after your date up to and including December 31, so it answers “how many more days”. The day-of-year figure counts January 1 as day 1, so the two cover the whole year without double-counting. Switch on “Count the date itself as remaining” to add today back in.

How are leap years handled?

When the year has a February 29, the total becomes 366 and the day number and percentage adjust automatically. The calculator labels leap years in the results.

When is the year 50% over?

In a common year the midpoint is 182.5 days in, which is noon on July 2. In a leap year it is 183 of 366 days, exactly midnight between July 1 and July 2. The milestones table shows the day that contains the halfway point for the year you picked.

How many weekdays are left in the year?

The calculator counts Mondays to Fridays after your date up to December 31. Public holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas are not removed, so subtract the ones that apply to you for working days.

What is a fiscal year?

A 12-month accounting year that can end in any month. The US federal fiscal year ends on September 30, the UK, Indian, Japanese and Canadian governments use March 31, and Australia uses June 30. Choose “Fiscal year” and its last month to count the days left in it.
