How it works
days = next December 25 (or December 24, or January 7) on or after the count-from date − the count-from date, in whole calendar days · weeks = days ÷ 7 · weekdays = Mondays–Fridays from the count-from date up to the day before · hours = days × 24
The countdown starts from today’s date on your device, or any date you pick, and looks for the next Christmas on or after it. If this year’s has passed, it moves to next year’s; on the day itself it reads zero. You can count down to Christmas Day, to Christmas Eve, or to Orthodox Christmas on January 7, the date kept by churches that still follow the Julian calendar. The result is shown in days, in weeks and days, in months and days, in sleeps, and in hours from midnight. It also splits the remaining days into weekdays and weekend days, which helps with shopping, school breaks and time off work. Worked example
Counting from Sunday, October 18, 2026: Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026, 68 days away. That is 9 weeks and 5 days, or 2 months and 7 days, and 1,632 hours from midnight. Of those 68 days, 49 are weekdays and 19 are weekend days (9 Saturdays). The first Sunday of Advent is November 29, 2026, 42 days away. Christmas Eve is 67 days away, and Orthodox Christmas on Thursday, January 7, 2027 is 81 days away. Christmas 2027 falls on a Saturday.
Frequently asked questions
Does it count today?
Not by default. It counts the days still to come, so December 24 reads 1 and December 25 reads 0. Turn on “Count today as a day” under More options to add one.
Why might the number differ from another site?
Time zones. The count uses the date on your device, so near midnight two people in different time zones can see a one-day difference for a few hours. Some sites also count today, which adds one.
What are “sleeps”?
The number of nights left before Christmas morning, which is how many children count down. It equals the number of days from today.
When is Orthodox Christmas?
Churches that follow the Julian calendar celebrate on December 25 Julian, which is January 7 in the Gregorian calendar until 2100. Many Orthodox churches, including the Greek and Romanian, use the revised calendar and celebrate on December 25.
When does Advent start?
The first Sunday of Advent is the fourth Sunday before Christmas, so it always falls between November 27 and December 3. Most Advent calendars simply start on December 1.
How is the weekday worked out?
From the calendar for that year’s December 25. Christmas moves one weekday later most years and two after a February 29, so it rarely falls on the same day two years in a row. The table of next Christmases shows the coming years.
