How it works

eligible = ( term GPA ≥ GPA cutoff ) AND ( credits ≥ minimum credits )

The dean's list rewards a strong term while enrolled full-time, so schools apply two gates at once: a GPA floor (commonly 3.5) and a minimum credit load (commonly 12). Meeting only one is not enough — a 4.0 earned across too few credits usually will not qualify, and neither will a full load with a GPA just under the cutoff. This check compares both of your figures against the school's thresholds and reports the margin on each.

Worked example

A student with a 3.6 term GPA and 15 credits is measured against a 3.5 GPA cutoff and a 12-credit minimum. The GPA clears the bar by 0.10 and the credits exceed the minimum by 3, so both gates pass and the student makes the dean's list.

Frequently asked questions

What GPA do I need for the dean's list?

Most schools set the cutoff between 3.5 and 3.7 for a single term, though some honors or top-tier lists require 3.8 or higher. Enter your school's exact figure, since it is not standardized.

Do part-time students qualify?

Usually not under the standard list, because dean's list rules typically require a full-time load (often 12+ credits). Some schools maintain a separate part-time honors list with a lower credit minimum — check your registrar's policy.

Is the dean's list based on term or cumulative GPA?

Almost always the term (semester) GPA, so a single strong term qualifies regardless of your cumulative record. This calculator uses your term GPA for that reason.
