DJ vs Band Cost Calculator
Compare the total cost of hiring a DJ versus a live band for your event, including add-ons and per-guest cost.
How it works
DJ total = DJ fee + add-ons · Band total = band fee + add-ons · Difference = |band − DJ| · Per guest = total ÷ guests
A DJ and a live band price very differently: a DJ is usually a single all-in fee plus lighting or MC add-ons, while a band charges per musician and adds travel, sound engineering and vendor meals, so bands typically cost three to five times as much. The honest comparison is the all-in total for each, then the same totals expressed per guest. Cost is only one factor — a band brings energy and presence, a DJ brings an endless playlist and seamless transitions — but seeing the dollar gap makes the trade-off concrete.
Worked example
A DJ at $1,200 with $300 of add-ons totals $1,500. A band at $4,500 with $800 of add-ons totals $5,300. The DJ is $5,300 − $1,500 = $3,800 cheaper. Across 120 guests that is $12.50 per guest for the DJ versus about $44.17 for the band.
Frequently asked questions
Is a DJ or a band cheaper?
A DJ is almost always cheaper — typically $1,000–$2,500 all-in versus $3,000–$10,000+ for a live band, because a band pays multiple musicians plus travel, sound and meals. This tool shows the exact gap for your quotes.
What do band add-ons include?
Beyond the base fee, bands commonly bill for travel and lodging, a sound engineer and PA system, vendor meals, and extra hours or an additional set. Ask for an all-in quote so the comparison against a DJ is fair.
Which gives a better party?
It is a taste and budget call. Bands deliver live energy and a wow factor; DJs offer any song, exact versions and gapless transitions, and can double as MC. Compare the per-guest cost here alongside the atmosphere each creates.
