Dog Bed Size Calculator
Find the right dog bed size from your dog’s length and shoulder height and how it sleeps — sprawled, on its side or curled up — with standard rectangular and round bed sizes in cm and inches.
How it works
bed length ≥ nose-to-tail length + 25 cm (sprawlers) · + 20 cm (side sleepers) · + 10 cm (curlers, round bed diameter) · bed width ≥ shoulder height
Pet bed makers and trainers size beds from two measurements: the dog’s length from the nose to the base of the tail, and its height at the shoulder. A dog that sleeps stretched out needs about 25 cm (10″) beyond its body length, a side sleeper about 20 cm (8″), and the width should at least match the shoulder height so the legs do not hang off. Dogs that curl into a ball are happiest in a round or bolster bed whose inside diameter is about 10 cm (4″) more than the body length. When between sizes, go up a size — especially for growing puppies and older dogs with joint pain.
Worked example
A dog 70 cm from nose to tail base and 50 cm at the shoulder that sleeps on its side needs a bed at least 70 + 20 = 90 cm long and 50 cm wide. The smallest standard size that fits is Large: 91 × 58 cm (36″ × 23″).

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my dog for a bed?
Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while the dog stands or lies stretched out, and from the floor to the top of the shoulders. Then watch how it sleeps: stretched out, on its side or curled up.
Should a dog bed be bigger than the dog?
Yes. Add about 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) to the dog’s length so it can stretch and turn around. Too small a bed forces awkward positions; much too big is fine for most dogs except anxious ones that like a snug bolster.
What size bed does a Labrador need?
An adult Labrador is usually 75–90 cm long and 55–60 cm at the shoulder, so most need an Extra large bed (107 × 71 cm, 42″ × 28″), or a Large if it sleeps curled up.
Are crate pads sized the same way?
A crate pad should match the inside of the crate, which itself should be about 10 cm (4″) longer than the dog. Use the dog crate size calculator first, then buy the pad for that crate.
